PICTURE NEW YORK SITE LAUNCHES

Picture New York, the group mobilizing to oppose the new regulations restricting the right of filmmakers, photographers, and amateur videomakers to shoot on the streets of New York, has launched their website. The site includes information about the proposed changes as well as details of an upcoming rally and other events staged to demonstrate the community's opposition to the rules.

They also have an online petition you can sign to register your own opposition. So far, the petition has drawn a great cross section of people, from documentarians to IA d.p.'s to people from the tourism industry.

The site also contains Juliana Luecking's video response to the proposal which I'm embedding below.

Whew! Glad I tuned in this web site. We're going to NYC in October for a meeting and planned to shoot some scenery in Chelsea. Since that cool area isn't well-populated anyway, we're just going to shoot. Thank goodness pro digital cameras look like consumer cameras. And we're just shooting available light scenery anyway. Obviously, where you'd run into trouble is setting up a tripod, lights and mics. So what happened to the shoot-all-you-want attitude of the NY Film Board? Yeah. I get it anyway. Security. And it's nearing election time. Such is life in the big city.

This video is not accurate. I think this might be the problem with just anyone being a filmmaker these days. Shouldnt someone have to actually learn how to make a film first before they call themselves a filmmaker? Stop whining about the rules that have been in place in this city for decades. If she has ever shot anything professionally in her life she would know that you always need to get a permit when you shoot (ITS FREE!!!) and the insurance (if you have ever done a professional shoot) would know the "coverage" is 1 million dollars, it does not cost 1 million dollars to buy the insurance. But she wouldn't know that because she is someone who "turns on a camera and points it in a direction" and not a real filmmaker who has learned and studied his craft over time and earned the title. I hate to seem bitter but I feel if you are going to present a film to someone please read a book on filmmaking first, and if you are going to make it a visual document or protest then please have knowledge of what you are talking about. The whiny amateurs are just making us real filmmakers look bad. I dont agree with this new proposed law but after seeing this film I wonder if this was the reason they wanted to start it.

Basically limpwrist shaking! Bullshit! I have never nor will I ever get a steeekeeeng permit. We will do as we always have. Set up a digital camera and shoot. We have never, ever been stopped in the city. So shoot away, or go cringe, you wimp!

Of course you wont get a permit. Because you wont need one. The reason for that is no one will ever hire you and your little toy digital camera. Grow some balls and try shooting with a film camera one day. Oh wait, that will take some intelligence, talent and skill. Forget that idea. Any little young tart like yourself can run amok in the streets with your little playschool camera and not have to worry. One day, after you finish elementary school, maybe you will get yourself off the couch from your 20th hour of PS2 gaming and learn how to shoot a real film. Until then, leave that up to the people with balls that can direct a crew of 50 or more and take take over the streets with trucks and equipment. Then you and your little you- tube obsessed fried brain can be a real filmmaker and know what it takes to be called a real director who works with clients and crews and actually gets paid. Permits required. Ohhhh, Im such a wimp, i use permits. What a jerkoff statement. You obviously have never been paid for shooting a thing in your little useless life. You are a playschool camera shooting hack with nothing that amounts to more than a shaky cam, blurry imaged, low res, home movie. Talk about "limp wrist", you dont even take your camera out of auto focus mode. How pathetic is that???

By their fruits ye shall know them! You are a perfect example of a New Yorki film school fool. Or some other bullshit give-me-your-money and we'll give you nothing "trade school! Yes, indeed, you ARE a TRADE SCHOOL FOOL!!!

For starters, you are uneducated. If you want to get ANYPLACE past the $6 an hour carryout boy at DAG, you should learn BASIC ENGLISH! No matter how true your point, if you can't use proper English, you are just another shit wanna-be. And you "ain't." Start your "edjykayshun" by using proper apostrophes with contractions. Viz-"Don't," not dont.

Go back to a REAL school, even if the desk is way too small for you. Then again, it matches your small mind. On the other hand, you are better as a 'puter ruggy with a low-life job cleaning toilets or carrying out smart people's groceries.

I've made several feature movies for cable, shooting in digital. What have you done, dumb brainless shit who can't use basic 5th grade English?

Answer: NOTHING.

Go hide. Try to get your money back from the "trade school" you MIGHT have gone to, but probably didn't.

My last posting hurt huh? Im ferocious when I want to be.

We see you changed the subject because I sized you up perfectly. Take care little boy. I guess we will meet when you are dumping out the shit container of my trailer.

I am wrapping this up now because its obvious you cant discuss filmmaking since you are a consumer DV camera, auto focus mode hack.

Film school? I wouldnt waste my time. Trade school? Try again. Self taught and succesful. Doesnt that make you squirm with envy?

After you clean the shit out of my trailer, dont forget to do a starbucks run.

Now be a good intern and run along. Leave the filmmaking to the grown ups. I have completed my lesson.

haha.ill reply to yew in the same dumbshit way to respond to me. ohmyeyeusedabigwerd--respond. yew r such a pathetic cocksucker that yew r nolonger of any use to me, yerself or anybody else. bet yer a half breed from the west side.

yew no so liddle about modern cameras that yew r not worth riting tew.

so go lite up a joint and suck another dick.

I am a BUSY MAN, punkfag.

One more thing, in standard English. Digital cameras and digital moviemaking are very fast taking over film. Film is history. Film is good mainly as archival and storage media.

Excellent results have been achieved in feature movies using small, $1,000 consumer digital cameras.

when yew lern 2 reed big werds, reed sum digit-ull kamra moovymakeeng manuhzines.

And go hide! Keep that low wage shit job. Someone has to do it. And you are that person. ahahahahahahahahahahah

And, having had the last word, I'm onto bigger and better things. I won't be back to read anything you may have tried to write.

I'm going to light up a big one, open a bottle of aged wine, get in my sleek sports car and head Upstate for an advertising product shoot in the Catskills.
