BLOOD AT MIDNIGHT

I'm editing now James Ponsoldt's interview with Paul Thomas Anderson that will appear in our Winter issue, and I've seen There Will be Blood twice so far, once at a screening and once on a DVD screener. I'll try to write a few thoughts about it in the coming days, but, for me, and definitely after the second viewing, upon which it gets even better, it is my #1 film of the year.

Here's Paramount Vantage's internet clip announcing this weekend's nationwide midnight sneaks. (Hat tip: Movie City News.)

I'm both puzzled and excited about the promotional efforts going into this movie. Premiering it at Fantastic Fest, setting up midnight promo screenings in a season where Sunday matinees are de rigeur for sneak peeks...it's all quite refreshing! I haven't seen the movie yet - I can't wait for the 29th.

Yeah, Paramount Vantage's combo of lots of early press long lead screenings, catering to fans and cineastes, odd, personal-feeling viral promotion clips, midnight sneaks and then, with the exception of that big New York Times Mag story, not beating us over the head with mainstream hype is really refreshing.

Btw, David, like your blog, as always (for those who don't know it, check it out at http://www.road-dog-productions.com/weblog/). And here on Xmas afternoon I'm listening to Karen Dalton too, so I appreciated your recommendation. But, yes, you must be clinically depressed if you don't like In Rainbows.

I'm not depressed and I haven't cared much for anything Radiohead's done since Kid A. While their sound has become more experimental, it just seems to me they've forgotten how to write songs. Songs that stick anyways. I'll take Fake Plastic Trees any day.

Hmmm, I like 'The Bends" and "Kid A." For me, this new album is more like the former than the latter. If anything, I think, one could criticize it for perhaps looking backwards, except that I felt it had a new and refreshing looseness to the playing and fun with regards to the arrangements. "Reckoner" is a particular favorite. Anyway, to each his own. (BTW, the "clinically depressed" comment referred to David's blog in which he said he must be clinically depressed because he's not as into the album as he thought he might be. I will submit that it is possible to not like the record and not be clinically depressed.)
