There can be no greater statement about the impending supremacy of user-generated, viral, and online video over what we now quaintly call "cinema" than this news from the Criterion Collection that the tony, canon-certifying brand is embracing the best of the Web. Below you can find the "Criterion Edition" of the already classic short The Landlord, with star Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay's video commentary track embedded.

While Criterion clearly got a kick out of this video, Criterion didn't actually make it. Will and Adam are making a very friendly and complimentary joke regarding the criterion status. Criterion, being who they are, got the joke and appreciate it.
To think criterion is actually doing treatments of 'viral videos' is kind of silly and makes the video less funny if you watch it with that presumption. Sorry to sound so aggressive, the internet makes everything colder sounding then desired. #posted by Anonymous @ 1/04/2008 10:21 PM
Um, I guess my own form of satire (N.B.: in the future, please note that posts using over-the-top phraseology often indicate tongue planted firmly in cheek) was a bit too subtle in this case. I'll try to make it more clear in the future. #posted by Scott Macaulay @ 1/05/2008 3:21 PM
