WHY NO BRAD RENFRO ON THE OSCAR TRIBUTE?

Us Magazine has a piece on their website about why Brad Renfro didn't appear in the Oscar tribute last night to those who passed away in the preceding year. For the record, an Academy spokesperson chalks it up to "an editing decision." There's an active comment section following the article and most are outraged that the talented actor, who died of a heroin overdose on January 15 and who spent half his life working in the movies, wasn't included.

...and what of Edward Yang, the director of the magisterial "Yi Yi", who passed away in late June? His is perhaps the most glaring omission.

Actually, Brad died on January 15. The snub is a shining example of what's wrong with that whole Hollywood circle.

Is it just me or was there no Roy Scheider tribute either?

AMPAS always seems to give short shift to Indie, Foreign, and Art film in their tributes. Last year they did not somehow see fit to include Adrienne Shelly in their tribute -- despite a pretty heavy lobbying effort.

It wasn't until after I posted this blog that I thought about some of the other people missed. Yes, Edward Yang and Roy Scheider are both egregious omissions, and I can't believe that Adrienne Shelly was missed the year before. I never thought until reading Ted's post that there would have to be lobbying efforts to ensure that notable people who did great work would have to be included on these tributes. Amazing...

The fact that Scheider was nominated for TWO OSCARS makes it even more absurd. Who the hell is responsible for coming up the list? I'm guessing a 12-year-old intern and his 90-year-old grandmother.

I remember reading an article last year -- I forget where -- regarding the Academy's criteria for including artists in the annual Oscar obit reel: apparently there aren't any. After complaints from family members of deceased film artists not included in last year's reel, the Academy as I recall explained that the choices were an internal decision and there's apparently no cohesive process for vetting and including relevant people. (AMPAS does list recently deceased Academy members, including Scheider at: http://www.oscars.org/academy/memoriam/index.html) As usual -- tell it to the Academy: http://www.oscars.org/contact/events.html

Somebody should pay Cynthia Swartz to consult on how to get the deceased into the montage...

Supposedly there is a cut off to the list. One would have to die previous to Jan. 30th to make the list. Roy Scheider died 2/10. I guess they need time to compile that 'stunning' death video....

At the beginning of the "In Memorium," it covers a certain time frame from ___ to ___ dates, and Roy Scheider passed away after the cut-off date. He'll likely be included next year.
