There's little to no unauthorized downloading of indie movies because there's almost no audience for them outside the immediate social circles of the people that make them. By the time unauthorized downloads actually become a problem for a piece of art, you are actually making money on authorized sales as well. 'piracy' is a boogeyman that people blame for failures instead of their inability to connect with an audience.

Wow, this looks interesting. I'll save the date. I also agree with what Wiley had to say. Well said!

Awesome indeed. Wish I were in LA to attend. Any plans, or need want help organizing an affiliated event in the DC area?

Re: Wiley's:
"There's little to no unauthorized downloading of indie movies because there's almost no audience for them outside the immediate social circles of the people that make them."
What happens when an indie movie is getting a lot of press from festival play, won't people outside of the filmmaker's friends be curious about that movie?
"By the time unauthorized downloads actually become a problem for a piece of art, you are actually making money on authorized sales as well."
Not if that movie is available for free via illegal downloads.

Not true. Piracy is a real problem. And as indie filmmakers continue with their work & may even end up working on a relatively widely distributed project, they may be able to see how piracy eats into the money they or whoever may legally make off of selling a movie. Piracy being a problem for Hollywood shoul also make it a matter of concern for indie filmmakers, because, like I said earlier, if you make indie movies for long enough you may end up having to deal with some of the problems that Hollywood has to deal with when it comes to illegal downloads/illegal DVDs, etc.

I am fortunate enough to have my film as part of the FHTA festival. Sure I'm worried about people thieving a piece of work that has taken me 11 years to make and the sacrifice of everything that I own. But I feel that the exposure out weighs the threat. If people see my film via downloads and they talk about it with their friends that is the outcome that we are after!
