The
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 15 titles on the shortlist for Best Documentary feature for the
Academy Awards (airing Feb. 22).
They are:
At the Death House DoorThe Betrayal (Nerakhoon)
Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah SeneshEncounters at the End of the WorldFuelThe GardenGlass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve PartsI.O.U.S.A.In a DreamMade in AmericaMan on WirePray the Devil Back to HellStandard Operating ProcedureThey Killed Sister DorothyTrouble the WaterI'm pleasantly surprised to see
Ellen Kuras's
The Betrayal made the cut (I really didn't think the Academy had it in them) but saddened that
Marina Zenovich's
Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired isn't on here. Though my favorite doc of the year made it (
Man on Wire),
Polanski is a very close second.
As usual, doc filmmaker
AJ Schnack masterfully dissects the shortlist as well as pointing out some other titles that got snubbed over at his blog,
All These Wonderful Things. Oscar nominees will be announced Jan. 22.

Ahem.
And of course, make sure to check out Filmmaker's Sundance short, Cut Short, by Jamie Stuart, that features two of the short-listed directors! http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/filmmakervideos/2008_01_01_archive.php

I'm disappointed not to see Moving Midway -- which I though was such a great film -- on this list. But I'm thrilled for Dan Junge, one of Filmmaker's "25 New Faces" alumni, whose They Killed Sister Dorothy made the cut so far.
