D-Word.Com
The D-Word began as a series of journal entries depicting the joy and angst of making and selling the feature documentary, "Home Page". It was meant to inform, inspire, humor and depress the hell out of working or aspiring documentary filmmakers, or anyone else interested in the filmmaking process, for that matter. In recent years, The D-Word's focus has shifted to hosting documentary discussion forums online. Now everyone can inform, inspire, humor and depress the hell out of each other. The D-Word Forum is where we hold a series of moderated online conferences with guest experts in the field. The week-long discussions cover the art, craft, business and social impact of documentary film. We also have a mentoring topic geared to beginning filmmakers with questions for our professional members. While registration is required, the Forum is open to all. The D-Word Community is a private forum for documentary professionals only. It's a kind of virtual doc lounge where you can hook up with peers from all over the world and converse about life, both reel and real. If you want to be part of this community and feel you have something to contribute, don't just sit there lurking... As an outgrowth of the discussions, D-Word Community members have produced two collaborative projects, to date, that are streaming online. The first is a collection of short films, "Essays on Documentary". The second, "War & Peace," is a response to September 11 and its consequences. Feel free to view them both and join the discussions.

D.I.Y OR DIE
D.I.Y. OR DIE: HOW TO SURVIVE AS AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST, an arts documentary by Michael W. Dean featuring interviews with: Ian MacKaye (Fugazi), Lydia Lunch, Mike Watt (Minutemen), J. Mascis (Dinosaur jr.), Jim Rose (Jim Rose Sideshow), Jim Thirlwell (Foetus), Richard Kern (Filmmaker), Ron Asheton (Stooges), Madigan Shive (Bonfire Madigan), Dave Brockie (Gwar) and 25 others. A 60-minute film on the methods and motivations of independent American artists in different genres and mediums. A celebration of the underdog. The film profiles a fascinating group of icons and unknowns working in various media including print, film, graphic art, performance art and music. The three-dozen interviewees are mavericks that operate outside of any "studio system", are beholden to no one, and produce influential, quality art regardless of a continuous paycheck.

Dahmer
Shocking, suspenseful, and strangely touching, DAHMER is no conventional crime drama.
Written and directed by David Jacobson — whose debut feature, CRIMINAL, received critical acclaim at both the Berlin and Toronto Film Festivals — DAHMER seeks to recast a modern symbol of evil as a man driven by very real weaknesses and needs and, in so doing, to broaden our sense of what it is to be human.

The Definition of Insanity
A film by Robert Margolis and Frank Matter (35mm/2004/fiction). "Co-director Robert Margolis stars as Robert, an actor who may or may not be himself in this intense and often hilarious film about acting, aging and the dark side of ambition. Expertly blurring the line between fact and fiction, 'The Definitiion of Insanity' was filmed over the course of 18 months, as a documentary crew follows Margolis obsessively from one failed audition to another, recording in raw detail his every humiliation and small triumph as he searches for that elusive perfect role that will catapault his career into the next level. Margolis, with his vaunting optimism leaping always one step ahead of a very real desperation, is riveting. When he finally scores his dream role in a film directed by the legendary Peter Bogdanovich, we know that his life has reached a profound point of change -- though what exactly will that change be? Co-director Matter is an unseen but keenly appreciated presence as he keeps the narrative firmly in check, while simultaneously letting the film explode in any number of unforeseen directions to deliver a frank and fresh testament to the burden of dreams." (Jamie Hook, Minneapolis-St. Paul Int. Film Festival)

Derrida
DERRIDA is an award-winning new documentary about the brilliant and controversial French philosopher best known as the founder of "deconstruction". Jacques Derrida's work has radically influenced the fields of literature, art, architecture, fashion, music and critical theory, inalterably marking the intellectual landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries. Bursting onto the academic scene in 1967 with the simultaneous publication of major philosophical works (OF GRAMMATOLOGY, WRITING AND DIFFERANCE, SPEECH AND PHENOMENA), Derrida's writing forged an indelible critique of Western metaphysics and how it affects and structures both language and thought. Directed by the acclaimed documentary filmmaker Kirby Dick (SICK) and Amy Ziering Kofman (a former student), DERRIDA premiered to standing room only crowds and rave reviews at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival before playing in film festivals throughout the world. Its bold visual style, mesmerizing score by Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, and novel editorial approach create a rich, lively cinematic experience - one that at once questions, provokes, and entertains. The most ambitious cinematic project ever undertaken with a world class philosopher, DERRIDA is a fascinating portrait of the life and legacy of one of the greatest and most influential intellectual icons of our time.

Docuweb
Essays on Documentary, an unprecedented virtual collaboration of documentary filmmakers. A collection of 8 short films (none longer than 5 minutes) that provide very different takes on being a non-fiction filmmaker, Essays was conceived and developed entirely online, and produced collaboratively, by members of The D-Word Community (www.d-word.com/community.html), a web-based discussion forum for documentary professionals from around the world. Now you can watch the works streamed online at Docuweb, as well as participate in ongoing discussions with the filmmakers about any and all things documentary. There's no commercial motive. Just a bunch of doc makers with something to say about what they do and why they do it, using the tools of the trade (mini-DV, Final Cut Pro and the web) to get their ideas out there. And, hopefully, inspiring folks who love documentaries to talk with each other.
