SUPERMARKET SWEET

The wonderful short Supermarket, written, directed by and starring Illeana Douglas, is now on Youtube. The film, which was on the festival circuit in 2004, transports us to a parallel universe where Douglas (playing herself) decides to quit acting and work at Bel Air Foods. There are self-depracating cameos from Daryl Hannah, Jeff Goldblum and Sarah Silverman, also all playing themselves, and there is a playfulness about the piece that you can’t help but find charming. It’s both a parody of actors and the movie business, and a celebration of people’s urge to entertain.

It was subsequently adapted into Illeanarama, a series of internet webisodes which can be found here, but the ideas never worked as well as in their original form. You can enjoy Supermarket below.

Wonderful? Or a reminder that Youtube isn’t doing anyone any favors… I think it’d be neat to come home from my job at a grocery store and watch this… [insert bronx cheer noise]

I love it. Actors who get to do their own thing…their own way…with their own dimes. Fresh. Fun. Give us more, Illeana! -Dave Temple

I really need to have this Secretary Series on my MP3 player to watch all the time. Seriously… I can’t figure out how to download anything either. Dumby I guess…
