“IDIOT WITH A TRIPOD”

Jamie Stuart has struck a popular chord with this lovely short shot during the December, 2010 East Coast blizzard. It’s got gorgeous visuals, humor, a slyly organic narrative, and, plus, it’s a tribute to Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera. We at Filmmaker have touted Stuart’s talents for some time, but now Roger Ebert has weighed in, arguing that this new short should win the Best Short Film Oscar. It’s also been picked up Gothamist, New York Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal, among many others. It’s shaping up to be Stuart’s viral hit.

I blogged it when it came out but am giving it a more prominent place of love here on our home page Video section. Watch below, and download the Quicktime here at Jamie’s site.

    Excellent movie with awful music.

  • Michel

This is really a bad film, occasional decent “snapshot” type photos, but overall amateurish and boring, there are so many better pictures and films out there that singling this one out is nothing more than another reflection of american bad taste and ignorance of the arts.

What the heck is your problem? Go out and make your own ‘art’ if you can, which I doubt.

Dude, chill. Everyone has a right to like or not to like this “masterpiece.”

Obviously a study in effective smart editing, movie music and poetic expression. Much appreciated, but I want just a touch more. Or maybe not?

Michel & Tapist: You’re the idiots here. Do us all a favor & go watch a Rambo movie or something.

A short and enjoyable film, well worth watching, and listening too. Chris from united kingdom

  • Mr. Paul

Pretty video, but that’s all. I feel like I’m being sold a VW.

Some career paths lead directly to commercials, n’est pas?

  • YK

I don’t see the “humor” or the “slyly organic narrative” …
as if they’re in on some big joke.

  • no_problem

Genius is cheap these days, approximately the price of a Canon DSLR.

So if I use music from another film for my short without permission, I can get kisses from the NY blogs and maybe win an Oscar for best short too? Kewl.

  • Philbert

is this an inside joke or what? since when are mediocre meaningless montages worthy of winning an oscar? like almost everything in the film industry these days, this video is all hype and no substance. anyone with a dslr can make this, but not everyone has the connections as mr. stuart. this video proves that talent is overrated and it’s all about who you know.

  • Atozeghers

This is not a good film! You can’t just take some cute video on your Canon DSLR? I would say, since there is no real story, that there is no concept in this film. Films do not need narrative structure but they surely need some kind of artistic vision or concept to be worthy of an OSCAR?? This was just some guy shooting pretty DSLR footage in a snow storm, and then edited it (with terrible titles) with some catchy music.

If, per chance, this film did impress you… I recommend you visit Winnipeg with your canon. There’s snow storms all the time here. Maybe after enduring a winter here you won’t find the snow storm so quaint.

Aaron, Ebert was probably joking. It’s ok :)

Not high art but a relaxing break in my busy day.

Hi dudes! For sure there’s a thousands of this on VIMEO! But the wonder of this film is the title. Is perfect!
