Though passed over for serious award consideration, David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method was one of this winter’s most striking and accomplished works. The veteran director and Gotham Award tributee’s first film in nearly half a decade, Method is well-in-line with Cronenberg’s more cerebral later work. Overviewing the lives of psychoanalysis founding fathers Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud (Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen, respectively), the film features a positively caustic performance by Keira Knightly as a patient who comes between the two. Cronenberg’s film is cerebral and engrossing, a foray into both the birth of a new scientific method and the fractured psyches of the three individuals responsible for it.
