Academy of Media Arts Cologne
The name "Academy of Media Arts" itself expresses the entire spectrum of interests supported by teaching and research at this institution, namely art in the age of its technological (re)production. The process of formulating and developing the interaction between artistic imagination, theoretical and historical knowledge and individual expression by means of new media places high demands on students as well as on the academic staff of the Academy. Both are working together to create a small utopia which involves bringing together and integrating those processes and interrelated interests in academic practice that continuously threaten to drift apart in everyday professional practice. An essential element of this process is also the joint development of a media/cultural identity, one conscious of its own social, political, aesthetic and ethical obligations. Today's media are social institutions. Our utopia has not only the power of the idea on its side, but the future as well. A first-class training for creative work in the emerging technologies can only be achieved through a symbiosis of art and culture, of poetry, science and technology. In this context, it is and must remain an experiment. Not one that stagnates in its own isolated aims, however, but one that is committed by the results of its work to enrich the quality of the media landscape, and to subject it to continuous critical examination and analysis. It is an experiment in which the instructors are aware of their obligation to prepare their students for the increasingly competitive international market in audio visual media.

APA International Film School
The Academy of Photogenic Arts International Film School, Australia's foremost industry based international film school, was formed in 1985 in order to provide relevant training for people wishing to enter the film and television industry. Originally known as the Academy of Photogenic Arts, it began trading as APA International Film School on 1st January, 2000, as it was felt that with the increasing number of overseas students attending its courses, this name better reflected its activities. The Academy's production complex is right in the centre of the action, just walking distance from many of the principal film and television facilities in Sydney. The Academy reviews its courses yearly to ensure that its teaching remains relevant and encompasses all the new developments. Teaching standards are high and all tutors are current members of the industry. Students work with 16mm film and digital formats, with post production on non linear editing systems. During the second year of the Diploma course students may elect to work with 35mm film cameras. When preparing students for a career in the film and television industry, it is the responsibility of an educational establishment to make sure that the skills their students acquire will enable them to gain employment. Students setting out to find a position in their chosen career, require the assurance that their attitude and knowledge will make an immediate good impression on their prospective employers. For this reason the Academy's Diploma course encompasses the most positive aspects of both academic and apprenticeship training, thus providing the industry with professionally trained personnel with broadly based theoretical knowledge and a thorough understanding of the practical workings of the industry. The Academy's Diploma of Film and Video Production course has full Government Accreditation through the NSW Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board (VETAB) and so do the Certificate IV and Certificate III exit points. This means that eligible local students can apply for Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY or AUSTUDY. The Academy is also on the CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) and reserves a percentage of its enrolments for overseas students. In 2000 students from 15 different countries attended our courses. If you are coming from overseas you will be interested to know that with the establishment of Fox Studios' multi-million studios complex, Sydney is the largest film and television production centre in the southern hemisphere. If you want to benefit from an excellent international education in film and television production and, as a wonderful bonus, enjoy living in Sydney, one of the world's most beautiful harbour cities, then a course at the Academy might be the right choice for you.

Filmfarm
A new European independent film school is now accepting applications for its first series of courses, to be taught by Hollywood filmmaker Mark Travis, in July 2002.
Filmfarm is located in a relatively secluded place in Western Poland that awakens the imagination. Novelists have traveled the roads hidden in the neighboring forests. The locals talk about ghosts in the village manor house. And a few film enthusiasts recently kicked off the idea of organizing seminars about movie-making in the very same manor house, planning to take the idea soon to a much higher level. The official aim of those enthusiasts who gathered at the manor house last Easter is the education of European filmmakers by means of exposing them to different currents of thought and encouraging them to express their individuality and culture through films that would bring satisfaction and commercial success. This summer, during the first two weeks of July, Mark Travis, a Hollywood filmmaker and teacher of the art of filmmaking, will conduct lectures at Kotla concerning various aspects of making movies. He will teach courses he has taught around the world, including script analysis, the rehearsal process, staging, the relationship between director, camera and the actors, and a workshop on directing.
The secluded Silesian manor which is the location of the July summer school is known as the FilmFarm. It is intended not only as a place for lectures but also as an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life where the participants can create their own reality.
The FilmFarm is about 250 km southeast of Berlin. It is a non-profit undertaking.

Minneapolis College of Art and Design
The Media Arts Division prepares students for professional or graduate work in photography, film, video, animation and multimedia with attention to new and evolving digital technologies. The curriculum stresses attaining an understanding of our activities as image makers and achieving a high level of technical competency. We feel that a core understanding of the functions and aesthetics across these areas is essential before students move into advanced work in specific media. The Media Arts Division challenges students (1) to become visually literate makers, highly skilled in the professional execution of their ideas; (2) to explore the applied and artistic aspects of the media; and (3) to responsibly address social, political and personal issues in their work. We encourage students from diverse backgrounds to participate. Classroom instruction is carried out by a broadly educated faculty with extensive professional accomplishments. Students have at their fingertips the studios and equipment of an extensive media arts center and computer center, where a dedicated staff maintains and upgrades equipment while assisting with its use. Through work on assigned and self-generated projects, students gain experience with a broad range of techniques and learn the approaches and working methods appropriate to the various forms and genres of the media arts. These include narrative, documentary, personal and experimental structures. The curriculum emphasizes individual and group activities; discussion and analysis of photographs, films and videotapes; and writings on theory and criticism. In-class reviews of works-in-progress help to refine and develop projects. Completed work is critiqued in class and there are opportunities for exhibition. Students are expected to achieve a high level of artistic quality, technical competence and academic accomplishment, as demonstrated by the work in their portfolio and their grade point average. Quality of the program is maintained by requiring that majors must receive a minimum grade of C before advancing to the next course level. In addition they must pass a Junior year review and complete a Senior Project with a grade of C or better.

National Screen Institute
The National Screen Institute - Canada is the oldest national Canadian training school for writers, producers and directors working in film and television. It is one of four federally recognized and supported National Training Schools for professional development in film and television. NSI is a "school without walls". Instead of bringing our students to a single facility, NSI takes its programs on the road, delivering them in major centers in every region of the country. For our participants, that means bringing them national-level training at home. Training is provided through a number of programs: NSI Features First, NSI Totally Television, NSI ZeD Drama Prize, and NSI Global Marketing. Each is designed to meet the needs of individuals with various levels of experience. Every program is based around the philosophy that the best way to learn is by doing.

New York Film Academy
The New York Film Academy Filmmaking Workshop was designed for the education of serious students of all backgrounds who share a common passion in mastering this art. We respect the goals and dedication of all our students, because the path to making films is not an easy one. Filmmaking demands the integration of many kinds of knowledge. It is the integration of knowledge that distinguishes the New York Film Academy from many other film schools. In our courses students learn not only how to operate a camera, light a scene, or edit film. They learn how all the aspects of filmmaking relate to, interact with, and depend upon each other. The curriculum of the New York Film Academy is constructed around a philosophy that balances in-class instruction with an intense exploration of the medium through practical, hands-on work. For us, learning by doing means requiring each student to make a series of short films. This takes them through the entire filmmaking process. Each student writes, produces, directs, and edits each film, then screens it and engages in constructive discussion and critique. The student applies the experience gained through this process to the next project, and the learning process continues. Workshop Length Orson Welles once stated, “If you give me three days, I can show you the ABCs of film.” The New York Film Academy gives our students a bit more time—our programs run from four to eight weeks. Our goal is to give students the basic tools and practical hands-on experience needed for film-making. This lays a solid foundation for future work. The students themselves will apply what they have learned to whichever path they take. For many students, the time and tuition required to complete a four-year university program are impractical burdens. We believe that students provide the talent; we provide the instruction, equipment and structure. It is the students’ drive and creative ability which carries them forward. We provide students with the opportunity to learn directing by doing just that— directing. Students are challenged to make creative decisions that in some way, great or small, contribute to the drama of their films. Everyone has a story to tell. We encourage students to explore the various ways of expressing an idea or a thought through moving images. The New York Film Academy believes that the correct path for filmmakers is to immediately start making their own films in a hands-on intensive working environment. Towards this end, all students begin making their own films in the first week of all our workshops.

New York University
The Department of Cinema Studies focuses its activities on the processes of understanding film and the moving image in its multiple cultural and interdisciplinary contexts. The program specializes in the history, theory, aesthetics, and criticism of film and the moving image; it combines an academic tradition of responsible scholarship and teaching with the particular requirements of a unique and autonomous field of study. Graduate instruction in cinema studies is offered by the Tisch School of the Arts, allowing close cooperation with the theatre, drama, film, and television units. The M.A. and Ph.D. degrees are granted by the Graduate School of Arts and Science. Most courses are offered in the afternoon and evening for the convenience of working graduate students. The Department is principally concerned with understanding the history, theory and aesthetics of film. Our approach to cinema is interdisciplinary and international in scope and concerned with understanding films in terms of the material practices that produce them and within which they circulate. While film constitutes our primary object of study, we also consider media and cultural production that fall within the realm of sound/image studies to be within our purview (e.g., broadcast television, video art, aspects of popular culture and on-line technologies). Hence, the Department's interdisciplinary focus is increasingly articulated through a multiplicity of objects of study, as well as a multiplicity of methodological options. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the field, we believe strongly in pursuing pedagogical and scholarly relations with NYU programs and departments which parallel and complement our concerns (e.g., Africana Studies, Anthropology, American Studies, Comparative Literature, Performance Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies). We pursue these relations through formal means (e.g., the faculty line co-sponsored with Africana Studies, the M.A./Ph.D. Certificate Program in Culture & Media, and the Center for Media, Culture & History), and through co-teaching of and cross-registration in courses. As well, because of the centrality of the relations of theory and practice to our concerns, we are committed to an ongoing curricular relationship with the Undergraduate Film & Television program and the Graduate Film program. Research is the wellspring of our Department. We are committed as faculty to the production of academic materials in the form of books, articles and anthologies, as well as participation in activities such as journal editing, conferences and professional organizations. The Department affirms the public role of our pedagogic function. We believe in preparing students for occupations in addition to those of professional academia and continue to recognize the significance of public education through film exhibition, conferences and public lectures. We also encourage collaborative relationships between our department and other institutions of film culture (e.g., museums, archives, libraries, etc.). We are committed to securing and protecting an atmosphere conducive to learning and productivity for both faculty and students. This entails investing in and maintaining state-of-the-art technical resources for the teaching of film and related technologies as well as monitoring both the faculty : student ratio and class sizes.

Discover how filmmakers like Christopher Nolan ("Memento", "Batman Begins"), Joe Carnahan ("Narc"), Darren Aronofsky ("Pi", "Requiem For A Dream"), Marc Forster ("Monsters Ball", "Finding Neverland"), and Tim Story ("Barbershop", "Fantastic Four") launched their careers with no-budget films.

Micro-budget (under $250,000) filmmaking is unique. The rules of production and post are radically different from those of studio or even "low" budget $1 million films.

North Carolina School of the Arts
The School of Filmmaking trains exceptionally talented students for professional careers in the moving image arts. This program stresses the collaborative creative process of filmmaking. The program does not seek to train professionals as specialists in one facet or another of the filmmaking arts and sciences. It does, however, seek to develop and nurture the complete filmmaker — a storyteller of vision and insight who knows and appreciates the entire spectrum of components that are essential to the creation of a theatrical motion picture. The intense conservatory training concentrates on cinematography, directing, editing and sound, producing, production design and screenwriting. The School of Filmmaking works closely with the Schools of Drama, Design & Production, Music, Dance and the Visual Arts Program as essential contributors to the filmmaking process. The faculty of the School of Filmmaking consists of working professionals from the motion picture and television industry. The relationship between faculty and students is one of "master-apprentice" involving close collaboration in all aspects of the development, production and exhibition of motion pictures. Students work in both video and film producing several productions of varying length over the course of their studies. The Bachelor of Fine Arts or a College Arts Diploma is awarded to those students who satisfactorily fulfill the requirements of the program.

Ohio University
The School of Film offers two graduate degree programs, the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and the Master of Arts (MA). The MFA program is a professional three-year program of study for talented individuals seeking advanced training in directing, screenwriting, producing, cinematography, editing, and motion picture sound with a solid background in film history, theory, and criticism. The MFA is a terminal degree and is designed for students who wish to enter the film industry, who wish to teach at the college or university level, or who wish to make their way as independent film artists. The MA program is a carefully structured two- year program in international film scholarship for students planning continued study at the doctoral level. The MFA and MA programs are designed to allow the entrance of talented students with no formal film training who have demonstrated extensive experience in another medium or academic discipline. While prior achievement in film making, video, or film scholarship is not necessary, acceptance to graduate study in the school requires a major commitment to these areas of study. Graduate study in the School of Film should not be perceived in terms of a vocational trade school; technical knowledge and skills are offered only as tools to achieve creative conceptual goals. Further, because the film discipline requires full integration and knowledge of related disciplines, all graduate study in film requires a minor area of study outside the School. The School of Film publishes Wide Angle, a quarterly journal of film; hosts the Ohio University Film Conference and, with the Peterson Sound Studio, provides students with access to an on-site professional mixing facility. The School of Film cooperates with the Athens Center for Film and Video which sponsors the annual Athens International Film and Video Festival.

Queen's University
The Department of Film Studies at Queen's University offers a comprehensive undergraduate program of practical, historical and critical courses. Many of the courses concentrate on today's systems of mass communication, information and entertainment, but they approach cinema and television, fiction and documentaries, advertising and experimental film, in the historical context that makes them possible. These historical and critical studies are combined with production courses in film, video and multimedia, on the premise that graduates should be versed in both the contexts and techniques of the art. Two converted Victorian houses on Stuart Street on the Queen's campus in Kingston (see a 70k aerial photo) hold the Department's classrooms, offices, screening rooms and workshops, packed with computers, DVD players, and film and video production facilities. Two larger multimedia-equipped classrooms are located in Ontario Hall, one block away on University Avenue. The Department has built a considerable collection of films, videotapes and video discs with funding from the university and external agencies. It has developed archival agreements with the National Film Board and the CBC, and with private donors. (The Department holds the complete works of noted Canadian filmmaker Allan King.) The archives serves as a resource not only for teaching within the Department but for the university and for scholars internationally, particularly in the area of Canadian film. Students can take advantage of international study programs at the International Study Centre at Herstmonceux, England, and a number of overseas universities, notably the University of Glasgow. We are involved in joint courses with Music and with Women's Studies, and in a special field concentrations with Drama ( Stage and Screen Studies). We are members, along with Drama, Music, and Art, of the Council of Fine Arts. Film Studies began at Queen's over 30 years ago, and has become a department highly respected in the field. Many of our alumni go into the film and television industries, and have won Oscars, Emmies and Genies. Film Studies courses, however, cover a wide range of educational areas and skills, and are designed to encourage students in the critical thinking that is important for graduate studies or for leadership in any profession.

Vancouver Film School
In 1987, Vancouver Film School opened with a class of 12 film students. Today, VFS offers eight full-time programs to over 750 students and 50 part-time courses to more than 2,000 students. VFS is unique in its program focus and its sole concentration on areas related to production of the moving image. In 1991, VFS offered the world's first integrated 3D animation production program. In 1994, we opened the world's first fully dedicated production training centre for new media. In 1997, we added Canada 's largest educational digital paint and effects lab to our classical animation program. In 1998, we introduced an acting program that crossed faculty boundaries to facilitate a much-needed interface between storyteller, maker and player. Vancouver Film School opened three new facilities in 1999: an expanded film centre, a multi-studio acting facility and a relocated and expanded classical animation centre. These new campuses are located within a block of each other for the specific purpose of creating convergent opportunities across departments. VFS has always believed that students get an enhanced educational experience when they can apply multiple resources and cross-program expertise in a collaborative, motivating environment. Our Mission Statement: Vancouver Film School programs focus on industries that use moving images, graphics, sound and text as fundamental components for communicating information and story. VFS programs, as a matter of design, regularly and continually evolve in response to current industry methodology, technology and need. Using production creation as the core learning engine, VFS imparts superior technical training in a measurably accelerated time frame. VFS graduates are preferred by industry employers or become industry employers themselves.
