MOSQUITA Y MARI In Aurora Guerrero's Mosquita y Mari, two young Chicanas forge a close bond in Huntington Park, Los Angeles. As they attempt to fulfill the expectations of their immigrant families, the two girls become wrapped up in their affections for each other. Consequently, they are forced to decide between their love and their duty to their families. Guerrero's writing-directing debut played earlier this year at Sundance to enthusiastic reviews proclaiming it to be a beautiful depiction of self-discovery and young love. Lauren Wissot recently interviewed Guerrero about the film for Filmmaker. DREAMS OF A LIFE In Carol Morley's Dreams of a Life, the filmmaker investigates the story behind Joyce Vincent, a woman whose dead body remained in her North London flat for three years before being discovered. Director of the film memoir The Alcohol Years, Morley combines interviews with filmed reconstructions starring Zawe Ashton for what critics have described as an intriguing case study and a deft portrait of London in the 80s. CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER In Lee Toland Krieger's Celeste and Jesse Forever, Celeste (Rashida Jones), an owner of a media-consulting firm, decides to divorce her less than driven husband Jesse (Andy Samberg). The two resolve to remain friends but quickly encounter hurdles once they begin opening themselves up to other people. Following his drama The Vicious Kind, starring Adam Scott (who co-stars with Jones in NBC's Parks and Recreation), Krieger takes a lighter turn for this idiosyncratic romantic comedy. This week on the blog, Scott Macaulay shares Wong Fu Productions' video on Why Filmmakers Should Use You Tube, reports from the Creative Capital Retreat (pictured left), and Zachary Wigon eulogizes the late Chris Marker and Gore Vidal.

CAROL MORLEY, DREAMS OF A LIFE
In 2003, when the badly decomposed body of 38-year-old Joyce Vincent was found on a sofa in her flat above a busy shopping district in Wood Green North London by bailiffs for the Metropolitan Housing Trust seeking back due rent, the news shocked the public. Nobody had reported her missing, even though she had been dead for three years. A pathologist could not determine the cause of her demise because nothing remained except a skeleton. Questioned by the police, neighbors admitted to noticing a foul odor emanating from the apartment but had never reported it. Stranger still, the television was on and she was surrounded by unopened Christmas presents. Joyce had, it seemed, vanished from the world without anyone bothering to notice. Filmmaker Carol Morley (a BAFTA nominee for her autobiographical documentary The Alcohol Years) was instantly intrigued and began a quest to find out everything she could about the deceased woman, but details were scant. After placing an advertisement in local periodicals, online, and elsewhere (including the sideboard of a London taxi), she began to hear from a variety of people who had known Joyce, none of whom was aware she had died, further adding to the poignancy and mystery of how she had managed to slip out of existence, and into oblivion.
