MORE ROOM

A while back I blogged about Tommy Wisseau’s The Room, which for years has screened monthly in L.A. in screenings organized by the filmmaker. Now, NPR has picked up on the story:

The consensus is that the movie is so bad it’s actually painfully funny to watch. What makes the experience so much fun are the hundred or so fans that routinely show up for screenings.

During the movie, audience members shout out their own commentary about the dialogue, the sets — and notably, the framed photograph of a spoon that inexplicably reappears. Each time this happens, plastic spoons are thrown at the screen, in the can-do spirit of Rocky Horror Picture Show fans.

Fans of The Room are cheering a cinematic train wreck. And the film’s writer, director and star — Tommy Wiseau — even attends some of the screenings.

Wiseau is cagey about where he got the reported $6 million he spent to finance The Room. The mystery has fueled numerous theories. But with so many people buying the DVD, soundtracks and T-shirts, it’s easy to see why Wiseau goes along for the ride.

Very mysterious comments written above…hmmm, I wonder which Tommy it was, you do know that there are clones of him. Yes, its how the film was able to get completed. One Wiseau would write and another Wiseau would direct the actor Wiseau while another Wiseau would watch from the closet. And who knows about the offspring that helped edit the film and get coffee. Rumors of finances root to possible harvesting of fetal Tommy’s for stem-cell research ($cha-$-ching$). Seriously you do not really believe that ONE Wiseau could have done all that hard work. I know. I dig through his garbage. The man is a self destructive genius pushing the meloncholy masochism beyond Andy Kaufman’s cancer (a nice nod to Lisa’s mother’s breast cancer). It is so bad it feels right. Pathetically niave filmmaking which would make Ed Wood vomit in shame. I have seen this movie more than 50 times over the past 3 years since its original run and each time I surf the net to see if this thing has gotten any bigger I die a little inside. Where is my life Tommy?! What have you done to it? I was just a god fearing filmmaker before I saw your film…now I realize there is no God only a blue screen.
